They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane and Jesus said, “Sit here while I go and pray.” He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Mark 14:32-34
Most of us can identify with Jesus at least in this way. We want to share our concerns with those we love – our closest friends. He had reason to believe that they were to be trusted to share the burden. However, like with us, no one can restore our deepest needs like the Father. The disciples loved Jesus but they were human. Also, when He said His soul was crushed, it is a different kind of grief from what we experience. He was about to take on the weight of the sins of all mankind. That grief is beyond our comprehension and surely was for the disciples also. The sharing of the mission God has left behind for us is also difficult to always understand and follow. But we are expected to make the effort, right?
